Ascomata apothecial, gregarious, discoid to pulvinate, sessile. Ectal excipulum composed of subangularis to globose cells, which are pigmented with carotenoid (yellowish to orangish) pigments. Medullary excipulum composed of cells of textura intricata. Paraphyses filiform, septate, branched, apically curved. Asci operculate to suboperculate, non-amyloid, cylindrical, with or without croziers, 8-spored. Ascospores globose to ellipsoid, guttulate, hyaline, uniseriate.

Type: Pulvinula convexella (P. Karst.) Pfister, Occ. Pap. Farlow Herb. Crypt. Bot. 9: 9 (1976)

Note: Hansen et al. (2013) suggested separating the PulvinulaLazuardia lineage from Pyronemataceae. According to our phylogenetic analysis, Pulvinula, Lazuardia, Pseudoboubovia formed a separate clade close to Ascodesmidaceae. Therefore, here we introduce the PulvinulaLazuardia clade as a new family Pulvinulaceae
