Etymology – In reference to the inhabited environment.

Colonies greenish gray or blackish gray. Mycelium consisting of hyaline, pale brown to brown, septate, branched, verrucose or smooth hyphae. Chlamydospores and multicellular bulbil-like structures brown, present or absent. Conidiogenous cells intercalary on hyphae, simple or with inconspicuous collarettes. Conone-to four-celled, pale brown to brown, smooth or rugose.

Type species – Salinomyces polonicus

Figure 1 – Maximum likelihood consensus tree inferred from a three-gene dataset (ITS þ LSU þ rpb2) of the Hortaea werneckii lineage and the sampled Teratosphaeriaceae and Extremaceae species. The position of the Salinomyces polonicus is indicated in bold. Numbers above branches indicate bootstrap support values from maximum likelihood and posterior probabilities from Bayesian inference analyses, respectively. The scale bar represents the expected changes per site. Cladosporium cladosporioides is used as an outgroup.
