Type speciesQuaternaria persoonii Tul. & C. Tul.

NotesQuaternaria was introduced by Tulasne & Tulasne (1863) and was typified by Q. persoonii. Clements & Shear (1931) lectotypified the illegitimate name Q. quaternata to Q. persoonii considered Quaternaria as a synonym of Eutypella (Tulasne & Tulasne 1863). Based on analyses of LSU and ITS sequence data and the discussion of Gams (1994), Quaternaria was considered to be an independent genus by Acero et al. (2004). The genus is characterised by stromata that are cryptosphaeroid in appearance and develop within the bark parenchyma.
