Notes: This genus was introduced by Fries (1822) and is characterized by black or dark coloured, sessile or sub-pedicellate apothecia which appear to be hysterothecia when dry, filiform paraphyses with branched, pigmented apices, cylindrical, fissitunicate asci which arise from croziers, and hyaline, brown or greenish ascospores (Kutorga and Hawksworth 1997; Yacharoen et al. 2015).
