Type speciesMelanocucurbitaria uzbekistanica Wanas., Gafforov & K.D. Hyde, in Wanasinghe et al., Fungal Divers. 89: 87 (2018).

NotesMelanocucurbitaria uzbekistanica was collected from Uzbekistan, on branches of Acer pubescens. It is characterized by immersed or semi-erumpent, coriaceous, black, globose to subglobose, ostiolate ascomata, septate pseudoparaphyses, bitunicate, cylindrical, asci and 1- seriate, muriform, mostly ellipsoidal, with 6–8 transverse septa and 2–4-longitudinal septa, hyaline to brown, asymmetrical ascospores with a mucilaginous sheath. Melanocucurbitaria resembles Marjia, Gemmamyces, Melanocucurbitaria, Muriformistrickeria, Uzbekistanica, Pseudostrickeria and Praetumpfia in having muriform ascospores, however, Melanocucurbitaria separated distinctly from these genera in phylogenetic analysis (Wanasinghe et al. 2018c, Fig. 109 in this study).

Figure 109 – Phylogram generated from maximum likelihood analysis (RAxML) of genera in Melanommataceae based on ITS, LSU, and SSU sequence data. Maximum likelihood bootstrap values equal or above 70 %, Bayesian posterior probabilities equal or above 0.90 (MLBS/PP) are given at the nodes. An original isolate number is noted after the species name. The tree is rooted to Amniculicola parva (CBS 123092). The ex-type strains are indicated in bold. Hyphen (-) represents support values below 70 % MLBS and 0.90 PP.
