This genus was introduced by Pfister (1989) and typified by K. chudei. It is distinguished by orange to red apothecia of less than 10 mm, J- asci, ellipsoid ascospores with multi guttules (Zhuang et al. 2004, Ribes et al. 2015, Kaya & Uzun 2018). In addition to the type species, three others are accepted, K. phyllogena, K. waterstonii, and K. ziziphi (Wijayawardene et al. 2017, 2020). Kompsoscypha species have a widespread distribution in tropical regions. Zhuang et al. (2004) introduced only K. waterstonii from China.
