Etymology: referring to the effuse colonies of the fungus.

Saprobic on decaying wood submerged in freshwater habitats. Asexual morph: Colonies effuse, dark brown to black. Conidiophores 60–130 × 3.5–7 μm ( = 95 × 5 μm, n = 20), macronematous, mononematous, erect, unbranched, straight or flexuous, 3–6-septate, dark brown at the base, narrower and paler toward the apex, smooth, thick-walled. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic, integrated, terminal, cylindrical, lageniform to doliiform, subhyaline to pale brown, smooth. Conidia 18–24.5 × 12–16 μm ( = 21.5 × 13.5 μm, n = 20), acrogenous, solitary, muriform, broadly clavate, obovoid to pyriform, usually with 2–3 transverse septa and a few longitudinal septa, with conspicuous pores in each cell, slightly constricted at the septa, pale brown at the basal cells and brown at the other part, basal cell obconical, truncate at base.
