Type speciesStaurosphaeria lycii Rabenh., Klotzschii Herb. Viv. Mycol., Edn Nov, Ser. Sec., Cent. 8: no. 736 (1858).

NotesStaurosphaeria and Karstenula were assumed to be congeneric in Montagnulaceae. Later the type K. rhodostoma was linked to the asexual morph of Microdiplodia frangulae. Staurosphaeria is characterized by red-brown conidia, developing a transverse septum, and later vertical septa, dividing the conidium into four compartments, which is distinct from Camarosporium sensu stricto in that conidia in the latter are unevenly pigmented (pale brown at ends), and multi-septate. Hence, by considering the morphological and phylogenetic support Staurosphaeria was included under Coniothyriaceae by Wanasinghe et al. (2017a).
