Type speciesAigialus grandis Kohlm. & S. Schatz.

Notes – Kohlmeyer & Schatz (1985) introduced Aigialus with A. grandis (type species) and A. parvus S. Schatz & Kohlm. in Melanommatales. Hawksworth et al. (1995) referred it to Massariaceae, Pyrenulales. Tam et al. (2003) showed that the genus was accommodated in Pleosporales, but suggested that further studies were required with more taxa to clarify its natural placement. Jones et al. (2009b) placed Aigialus in the Pleosporales incertae sedis and accepted four species but rejected A. rhizophorae as it shared similar morphology with A. grandis, but differed in the vertical septation in the subapical cell (Suetrong et al. 2009). Further collections of A. rhizophorae were made in Thailand with sequence data that confirmed A. rhizophorae was clearly distinct from A. grandis (Suetrong et al. 2009, Jones et al. 2019a). Five species are accepted in Aigialus (Jones et al. 2019b).
