The genus Trichoglossum is typified by T. hirsutum (Pers.) Boud. Trichoglossum species are characterized by black or dark brown, club-shaped apothecia, inoperculate, amyloid asci, hymenial setae (presence in both ascogenous and sterile portions), apically curved or coiled, septate paraphyses and fusoid, septate ascospores. They are saprobes in soil (Mains 1954). There are 24 species listed under this genus (Index Fungorum 2023).
