Torula gaodangensis J. Yang & K.D. Hyde, Fungal Divers. 87, 113 (2017)
Index Fungorum number: IF553199; MycoBank number: MB553199; Facesoffungi number: FoF03288
Saprobic on submerged decaying wood. Asexual morph: Colonies superficial, effuse, sparse, erect, brown to dark brown. Mycelium mostly immersed, composed branched, smooth-walled, hyaline to pale brown hyphae. Conidiophores 12–70 × 2.5–4.3 µm (x̅ = 25.2 × 3.3 µm, n = 10), macronematous, micronematous, erect, straight or flexuous, pale brown to brown, cylindrical, septate, unbranched, thin, smooth-walled. Conidiogenous cells 7.2–8.2 × 5.4–7 µm (x̅ = 7.8 × 6.1 µm, n = 30), monoblastic, integrated, terminal and intercalary, inflated, subglobose to oblatesphaeroid, with flattened base, dark brown to black, verrucose. Conidia 22–31 × 7–9.1 µm (x̅ = 27.6 × 8.2 µm, n = 30), acrogenous, solitary, brown to dark brown, subcylindrical, slightly wider at the middle cell, narrower towards the both ends cells, straight or slightly curved, 6–8-septate, constricted at the septum, apically rounded, truncate at the base, with a darkened scar connect to conidiogenous cell, verrucose, guttulate. Sexual morph: Undetermined.
Culture characteristics – Conidia germinating on PDA within 12 h, and germ tubes produced from both ends. Colonies on PDA reaching 40 mm diameter after 4 weeks at room temperature. Mycelium dry, dense, colonies on the surface of PDA, with regular edge, edges brown and the center grey, with a ring-shaped depression in the center. Reverse dark brown, smooth, splitting from the center.
Material examined – China, Yunnan Province, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Bamei Town, on submerged decaying wood, 7 February 2022, W.P. Wang, S-3258 (HKAS 131389), living culture KUNCC 23–13705; ibid., S-3285 (HKAS 131391), living culture KUNCC 23–13728.
Notes – Phylogenetic analysis showed that our new collections clustered with the ex-type strain of Torula gaodangensis with 99% ML/1.00 PP support (Fig. 2). Our new collections resemble T. gaodangensis in having monoblastic-acropetal conidiogenous cells with flattened base, and acrogenous, up to 8-septate conidia with a darkened scar connected to conidiogenous cells. Therefore, we identified our collections as T. gaodangensis, a species which was known from freshwater and terrestrial habitats in China (Hyde et al. 2017, 2020a).

Figure 2 – RAxML tree based on analysis of Torulaceae that combined ITS, LSU, tef1-α, SSU, and rpb2 dataset. The combined analyses include 69 strains with 4166 characters including gaps (ITS: 554 bp, LSU: 806 bp, tef1-α: 812 bp, SSU: 979 bp, and rpb2: 1015 bp). Bootstrap support values for maximum likelihood (ML) greater than 75% and Bayesian posterior probabilities greater than 0.95 are indicated above branches as ML/PP. The tree is rooted with Neooccultibambusa thailandensis (MFLUCC 16–0274) and Occultibambusa bambusae (MFLUCC 13–0855). The new collections are indicated in red. Ex-type strains are indicated with “T” after the strain number.
