Monilochaetes nothapodytis S.X. Zhou, J.C. Kang & K.D. Hyde, sp. nov., Index Fungorum number: IF 553575
Etymology:n ‘nothapodytis’ referring to its host.
Endophyte in leaves of Nothapodytes pittosporoides. Sexual morph : Undetermined. Asexual morph: hyphomycetous, after 20 days on PCA at 25 °C in darkness, producing conidiophores, conidia and microconidia. Two types of conidiophores and conidiogenous cells are produced. 1) Macroconidiophores 300–640 μm long, 7.5–13 μm wide near base and 7–10 μm wide in middle, unbranched, single, erect, arising from aerial mycelium, pale to dark brown, subhyaline towards apex, slightly flexuous, with 9–15 septa. Macroconidiogenous cells monophialidic, apical, cylindrical, with wide channel and minute collarette, subhyaline, paler towards collarette, 18–50 μm long, 7.5–8.5 μm wide at widest part. Macroconidia 16.5–24 × 9.5–15.5 μm, hyaline, aseptate, ellipsoidal to cylindrical-ellipsoidal, thick-walled, broadly rounded at both ends, without obvious abscission scar, smooth-walled, aseptate. 2) Microconidiophores more or less erect, arising from aerial mycelium, sparingly branched to penicillium-like head, pale brown to subhyaline, 18–35 μm long, 4–5.5 μm wide at widest part, tapering to ca. 1.5 μm just below collarette. Conidiogenous cells terminal becoming intercalary, monophialidic, subhyaline to pale brown, usually paler towards apex, cylindrical, 6.5–11 μm long, 4.2–5.5 μm wide at widest part, tapering to ca. 1.5 μm just below collarette. Microconidia 3–4.9 × 2.9–4 μm, hyaline, aseptate, thick-walled, smooth-walled, broadly ellipsoidal to subglobose, rounded at ends, base slightly tapering, obtuse with a minute abscission scar, accumulating in small, clear to whitish
droplets.
Culture characteristics: Colonies on PDA after 10 d at 25 °C in darkness, 40–50 mm diam., more or less planar, surface dark brown, covered with abundant, pale grey, lanose to cottony aerial mycelium, margin smooth and entire, reverse grey, sterile. Colonies on PCA after 10 d at 25 °C, in darkness 30–35 mm diam., planar, surface brown,
covered with pale grey, lanose to cottony aerial mycelium, margin smooth and entire, reverse dark grey.
Material examined: CHINA. Guizhou Province: Zhouzhou, Tongren (N 27°35′37″, E 109°10′58″, elevation 332.8 m), from a leaf of Nothapodytes pittosporoides, 27 May 2016, S.X. Zhou and L.J. Qiao (GACP TRY2-34, holotype), ex-type living culture, KUMCC 17-0154.
