Drepanopeziza brunnea (Ellis & Everh.) Rossman & W.C. Allen, Mycotaxon 132(4): 952 (2017)

Index Fungorum number: IF 229926; MycoBank number: MB 229926; Facesoffungi number: FoF16131

Associated with leaf spots on leaves of Populus × beijingensis W. Y. Hsu. Sexual morph: Not observed. Asexual morph: Coelomycetous. Conidiomata 117–125 × 7–18 μm (x̄ = 122 × 12 μm, n = 20), acervulus, immersed, brown to black, solitary, conical, uniloculate, glabrous, comprising 3–4 layers of thick-walled, brown cells of textura angularis, becoming thin-walled and hyaline towards the inner region. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells, arising from the inner cells of the conidiomata. Conidiogenous cells 4–7 × 2–4 μm (x̄ = 5.3 × 2.9 μm, n = 30), hyaline, ampulliform or cylindrical, annellidic, separate, smooth. Conidia 12–18 × 6–8 μm (x̄ = 16 × 7 μm, n = 50), solitary, oblong to ovoid, hyaline, 1-septate, slightly constricted at septa, straight to slightly curved, thin-walled, smooth.

Culture characteristics – Colonies on PDA attaining 20–25 mm diameter in 60 days, dense, subcircular, crenated, dark brown in the center, greyish white towards the margins, aerial mycelium infrequent, raised, reverse brown to dull brown.

Material examined – China, Sichuan Province, Chengdu City, Wenjiang District, Schoolyard of Sichuan Agricultural University, 103°51′27.55″E 30°42′19.5″N, 533 m, isol. from leaves of Populus × beijingensis, 3 Nov. 2020, C.L. Yang, YCL202011007 (SICAU 23-0142), culture SICAUCC 23-0106)

GenBank numbers – SICAUCC 23-0106 = ITS: PP769691, LSU: PP719623

Notes – This new isolate shares a close relationship with Drepanopeziza brunnea, with 96% MLBS and 0.97 BYPP support. Moreover, sequence comparisons unequivocally establish their conspecific status, revealing a similarity of 99.0% (492/494, 0 gap) to D. brunnea (RHY8445A) in the ITS region (Stanosz et al. 2021). Morphologically, the isolate closely relates D. brunnea, showcasing 1-septate conidia and a 2-guttulate upper cell (Magnus et al. 1906), aligning with the detailed characterization provided by Magnus et al. (1906). Consequently, we formally introduce this isolate as D. brunnea.
