Notes – Type species Coprinus comatus (O.F. Mu¨ll.) Pers., ink caps, saprotrophic, worldwide (Vellinga et al. 2011), nineteen species described to date. The genus is characterized by having whitish pileus except for the center, and usually oblong, height-width ratio, annulus present on lower half of stipe, with a reflected veil, basidiospores ellipsoid to almond-shaped, with a truncated germ pore, dark brown, inamyloid. Polygenic phylogeny indicated members of Coprinus formed a unique lineage with excellent support, and closely related to the unusual genus Montagnea (Vellinga et al. 2011).
