Canalisporium jinghongense L. Cai, K.D. Hyde & McKenzie, Cryptog. Mycol. 24(1), 4 (2003)
Index Fungorum number: IF630331; MycoBank number: MB630331; Facesoffungi number: FoF16112
Saprobic on submerged decaying wood. Asexual morph: Colonies superficial, punctiform, pulvinate, square granular, dark brown. Mycelium immersed, composed of unbranched, septate, subhyaline to pale brown hyphae. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous cells 2.4–7.6 × 2.3–4 µm (x̅ = 4.7 × 3.2 µm, n = 15), monoblastic, cuneiform, integrated, terminal, determinate, hyaline, sharp at the base. Conidia 22–35 × 18–30 µm (x̅ = 28.1 × 24 µm, n = 40), solitary, acrogenous, obovoid to irregularly subglobose, brown, smooth, thick-walled, usually composed of (2–) 3 (–4) rows of transverse septa, and 3–5 columns, starting at the base of the cells, strongly constricted at the septum, darkened and thickly banded at the septa, basal cell cuneiform, guttulate, flat, and on the same plane. Sexual morph: Undetermined.
Culture characteristics – Colonies on the surface of PDA, slow-growing, reaching 10 mm diam in 1 month at room temperature, dry, surface rough, dry, irregular edges, reddish brown to dark brown. Reverse dark brown to black, smooth.
Material examined – China, Yunnan Province, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Bamei Town, on submerged decaying wood, 28 February 2023, W.P. Wang, S-4593 (HKAS 131357), living culture KUNCC 23–14579.
Notes – Phylogenetic analysis showed that our new collection (KUNCC 23–14579) clustered with two strains of Canalisporium jinghongense (SS 03483 and SS 03491) (Fig. 56). Conidia of our new collection are irregularly subglobose with (2–) 3 (–4) transverse and 2–4 vertically thickly banded septum, and strongly constricted at the septum, which are similar to those of C. jinghongense. Therefore, we identify our new collection as C. jinghongense. This species has been collected from freshwater habitats in China and Thailand (Boonyuen et al. 2011, Goh & Kuo 2021).

Figure 2 – RAxML tree based on analysis of Savoryellaceae that combined LSU, ITS, SSU, rpb2, and tef1-α dataset. The combined analyses include 61 strains with 4194 characters including gaps (LSU: 798 bp, ITS: 520 bp, SSU: 944 bp, rpb2: 1061 bp, and tef1-α: 871 bp). Bootstrap support values for maximum likelihood (ML) greater than 75% and Bayesian posterior probabilities greater than 0.95 are indicated above branches as ML/PP. The tree is rooted with Pleurotheciella aquatica (MFLUCC 17–0464) and P. erumpens (CBS 142447). The new collections are indicated in red. Extype strains are indicated with “T” after the strain number.
