Bovista Pers., Neues Mag. Bot. 1: 86 (1794)

Notes – A multigene phylogeny of the Lycoperdaceae family revealed that the previous genus Bovista was not monophyletic; instead, Bovista subgenus Bovista and subgenus Globaria formed distinct, well-supported clades. Consequently, these subgenera have been elevated to the rank of genera. Bovista is now redefined with Bovista plumbea Pers. as its type species. The main morphological features distinguishing Bovista from Globaria include the absence or reduction of the subgleba, Bovista-type capillitium, and pedicellate spores (Li et al. 2024b).
