This is the type family of Atheliales. Jülich (1982) included the genera Athelopsis, Caerulicium, Confertobasidium, Leptosporomyces, and Luellia in Atheliaceae.Wijayawardena et al. (2022) accepted 20 genera in this family. Atheliaceae mainly consists with saprotrophic taxa, with one lichenicolous species (Athelia arachnoidea) (Sulistyo et al. 2021).
