Boletaceae was described by Chevallier (1826) as a distinct family from Agaricaceae. Following the introduction, the family has been subjected to extensive research with many changes brought to the taxonomy based on molecular phylogenetic analyses (Binder & Hibbett 2006, Nuhn et al. 2013, Wu et al. 2014b, 2016). Boletaceae comprises about 92 genera (He et al. 2019).
